6 Tips for Trailer Inspection & Maintenance (Checklist included)

After we purchase the trailer, we wish our “buddy” can stay with us as long as possible and cover the mission we offered without any problem, which make the inspection and maintenance of the trailer very important. Therefore, today we would like to share some ideas and suggestions about how to keep your trailer healthy as a trailer manufacturer:

1. Inspection of Trailer Appearance

Inspecting your trailer before driving them out is one of the key processes. You will be able to find potential problems to avoid safety hazards during the transportation of the vehicle. The following are the components you may would like to focus on:

  • Appearance inspection: before we use the trailer, please make sure there are no obvious cracks or loose parts on your trailer. For steel, you also need to pay attention to the rust problem of the chassis, especially for trailers parked outdoors and not cleaned or used for a long time. On the other hand, for aluminums, you need to pay attention to whether there is oxidation, and using professional cleaners to remove the oxidized surface in time will help your trailer return to its youthfulness and avoid potentially dangerous factors.

  • Key points you may like to check: Fender, D-Ring, Trailer Jack, hardware (especially related to ramps), locks of toolbox, etc.

2. Tires

No need to mention the importance of the tire of your trailer as they directly affect driving safety and stability.

  • Check the wheel hub: Bumps and minor scratches may cause burs or slight deformation of the wheel hub.

  • Check the tread: check the surface of tire so that the braking performance can be guaranteed.

3. Maintenance of the Brake System

Especially the emergency brake protector (Brake away System), which can help you effectively deal with emergencies. It is worth noting whether the battery is sufficient and whether the cable connection is tight enough. In addition, for users who use it frequently, we recommend that you consider a Brake away System with solar charging function.

4. Maintenance of Connections

The connecting parts of the trailer are the core link between the tractor and the trailer. If your trailer is loaded with heavy objects for a long time or is driven on bumpy roads, you may need to pay more attention to the connecting parts such as the coupler, ball mount, and jacks of the trailer.

The first thing to confirm is the pin-plug that is connected to the tractor to ensure that the trailer can be powered functionally with the lighting system. For customers who use the trailer intensively, it is also necessary to match the right coupler and maybe prepare multiple couplers and jacks if needed.

5. Inspection of Lighting System

You can’t drive a trailer without a brake lamp or turning lamp available right? Be aware of your daytime running lights (if any), brake lights, turn signals, reversing lights, night-time running lights, clearance lights, etc. Sometimes these lights may flicker, short-circuit or open-circuit. Please check whether the vehicle wiring harness is damaged or poorly connected in time. If the wiring problem has been eliminated, the bulb should be replaced immediately. In addition, clean reflective tapes will also give you additional safety for night driving.
