Different Types of Trailers and What They Do

Updated: Nov 19, 2024

When it comes to transportation and logistics needs, choosing the right trailer type is crucial. There are a variety of trailer types on the market, each designed for specific uses and cargo transportation needs. From versatile flatbed trailers to refrigerated trailers specifically for refrigerated goods, each type has its unique advantages and applicable scenarios. Let's take a deeper look at the mainstream trailer types on the market to better understand their characteristics and uses.

These are the main popular models of trailers on the market, and we will introduce them to you from the perspective of practicality and other aspects.

  1. Flatbed Trailers

These trailers have a flat platform or normally called flatbed, which is normally made of wood, and without sides or a roof, making them versatile for transporting large or oddly shaped cargo. Flatbed trailers are commonly used in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and transportation for carrying materials like machinery, equipment, lumber, steel beams, and other large items that may not fit or be suitable for enclosed trailers. Flatbed trailers provide flexibility in loading and unloading cargo from the sides or above using cranes or forklifts, making them efficient for various types of freight. Their open design allows for easy accessibility and securement of loads with straps, chains, or tarps to ensure safe transport. Flatbed trailers play a crucial role in the logistics and transportation sector, offering a practical solution for hauling bulky and irregularly shaped items across different distances and terrains.

  1. Dry Van Trailers

Dry Van Trailers are also called Enclosed Trailers. Enclosed trailers made with side walls and roof, normally made in aluminum with polywood board as interior, commonly used for transporting dry goods and protecting cargo from the elements. Polywood is highly durable and resistant to rot, corrosion, insects, and other environmental stressors. It does not splinter, crack, or peel like traditional wood. Enclosed trailer has a wide range of sizes from single axle to tandem axle, This also allows us to have more choices in different load-bearing demand scenarios.

  1. Refrigerated Trailers

Refrigerated trailers, commonly known as reefers, are specialized trailers designed for transporting perishable goods that require specific temperature-controlled environments during transit. These trailers are equipped with refrigeration units(which normally can be operated from -13℉ to 68℉) that can maintain precise temperature settings to ensure the freshness and quality of the cargo, such as food products, pharmaceuticals, or other temperature-sensitive items. Refrigerated trailers play a crucial role in the supply chain, especially for industries like food and pharmaceuticals, where maintaining the cold chain is essential for product integrity. They come in various sizes and configurations to accommodate different types of perishable goods and transportation needs. With advanced cooling technology and insulation, refrigerated trailers provide a reliable and efficient solution for transporting goods that require refrigeration or freezing temperatures to reach their destination in optimal condition.

  1. Dump Trailers

A dump trailer is a specialized type of trailer designed for transporting and unloading bulk materials such as gravel, sand, construction debris, or agricultural products. These trailers are equipped with hydraulic systems that allow the trailer bed to be raised and tipped, enabling easy and efficient unloading of the cargo. Dump trailers come in various sizes and configurations to accommodate different load capacities and towing vehicles. They are commonly used in construction, landscaping, agriculture, and waste management industries due to their versatility and convenience in transporting and depositing materials at job sites. The ability to quickly unload materials at the desired location by simply raising the trailer bed makes dump trailers essential equipment for many industrial and commercial applications.

  1. Lowboy Trailers

Lowboy trailers are specifically designed with a low deck height. Lowboy trailers are ideal for transporting tall or oversized cargo, such as heavy machinery.

  1. Livestock Trailers

Tailored for transporting animals, these trailers often have partitions and ventilation systems to ensure the safety and comfort of the livestock.
